Photography Best Practices

Photos have the power of enhancing stories or sometimes even telling stories of their own. Although it’s not always as simple as pointing the camera and clicking a button, you also don’t have to be a professional photographer in order to capture a great shot. Here a few tips to guide you:

  • Ask the subject(s) of your photograph if you have their permission to post their image online. Not everyone is comfortable with their photos being posted publicly, so be sure to be up-front about this.

  • Relax and be confident. Being confident behind the camera will go a long way at putting your photography subject at ease.

  • Don’t be afraid to get creative! Not every photo has to be a perfectly posed portrait. Is there something unique about the person you’re photographing that you can highlight? Is the background or surroundings relevant? Consider including or showcasing these details.

  • In order to keep uniformity of shape and size of the images, each photograph will be cropped to a square. The ideal image size is 1080x1080. Keep this in mind when you are setting up the composition of your photo.

  • It’s okay to take more than one photo. You won’t always get the ideal shot on the first try, so snap a couple photos and pick the one that best tells the story.
